Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 21 Rice 5-2

HOUSTON, TEXAS – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team fell 5-2 to the 21st-ranked Rice Owls on Saturday, March 1. NM State drops to 4-7 this season, but sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava continues with a six-match winning streak in singles play.

Rice swept the doubles matches to get the first point. Freshmen Brittany Collens and Chloe Jollliff fell at the No. 1 court 8-2, while the Aggie duo’s at the second and third spots fell 8-2 as well.

At the fourth singles court, Shrivastava took her first set to a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3) and won the second set 6-4 for her sixth consecutive win this season, improving her spring singles record to 8-3 this season.

The second Aggie win came at the No. 6 spot as Collens picked up her second straight win as her opponent was retired after the first set. She won set one 5-2.

The Aggies fell in straight sets at the other four courts with Jolliff battling a two-set loss at the No. 2 spot to the 74th-ranked Katherine Ip. She lost 6-0, 6-2.

The Aggies finish the weekend against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 9 a.m. in Houston, Texas.
