Aggies Finish Strong at New Mexico Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The New Mexico State track and field team wrapped up the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Albuquerque, N.M.

Freshman Katara Nelson had a strong performance in the 60-meter dash where she finished fourth with a time of 7.84, which was the fastest time for the Aggies.

In the 200-meter dash, senior Alishia Perkins finished first for the Aggies and sixth overall with a time of 24.62. Nelson also ran the 200-meter dash, where she finished with a time of 25.29. They were joined by freshman Paige Patterson, who finished with a time of 25.09, which is tied for 10th for the Aggies all-time.

Patterson finished first for NM State and sixth overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.37. She was joined in the top 10 by senior Zoe Meade, who was eighth with a time of 57:51. Senior Deserae Cota finished 14th with a time of 58.79.

“We’re getting closer to the conference meet so we’re trying to get a little more consistency from our kids right now,” head coach Orin Richburg said. “Overall just moving forward and working on consistency. Our kids did well this weekend and we have a meet next week then a week off then it’s time for the conference championships so we’re just working on our consistency right now.”

The Aggies had three runners finish in the top 10 in the 600-meter run: sophomore Latrice Brooks finished fourth at 1:36.00, freshman Shaniece Prevot finished fifth 1:36.28 and sophomore Kelsi Gonzalez finished seventh at 1:37.55.

The Aggies had four top-10 finishers in the 800-meter run and were led by Brooks, who finished sixth with a time of 2:17.44. She was followed by Prevot, who finished with a time of 2:18.94, which was good for seventh. That time puts Prevot at eighth all-time for NM State. Gonzalez finished eighth with a time of 2:19.29, which puts her at 10th all-time for the Aggies.

Junior Diana Hawk finished the 800-meter run ninth overall with a time of 2:19.56. Hawk also competed in the 1-mile run, where she finished third with a time of 5:00.86.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Cota led the Aggies and finished fifth overall with a time of 9.24. She was joined by freshman Savannah Coleman, who finished sixth with a time of 9.28.

NM State put the team of Patterson, Meade, Nelson and senior Brianna Cromartie to run the 4x400-meter relay. The team finished sixth with a time of 3:52.37.

Freshman Akuadasou Ezenyilimba finished 10th in the 20-pound weight throw with a distance of 14.90m (48-10).

The Aggies will be back in action when they travel back to Albuquerque for the Don Kirby Invitational on Feb. 14-15.
