LAS CRUCES, N.M.—Head track and field coach Orin Richburg announced Thursday the signing of sisters Cristina and Cassandra Amberg to the Aggies’ squad for next season.
Both Cristina and Cassandra attended Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, N.M., where they focused on cross country and distance running in their careers.
Cristina Amberg was part of the state championship runner-up cross country team in 2013. She was an individual state champion in the three-mile run, however, and finished with a time of 18:46.45.
Cristina is a former 800-meter champion and posted her fastest time at 2:18.00. She was the Great Southwest runner-up, she holds the Cross Country Metro course record and was named Academic All-District.
Cassandra Amberg was also a member of the 2013 squad that finished as runner-ups to the state championship. She finished second only to her sister individually in the cross country state championship with a time of 19:08.20.
In 2013, Cassandra was the state runner-up in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.65, which was her fastest finish in the race in her career. She was also a member of the 1600-meter medley relay team that won a state championship and was named Academic All-State.
Cristina and Cassandra were also part of the 2012 cross country team that won the state championship.
“Being able to sign both Cristina and Cassandra was a big deal,” assistant coach Christopher Huff said. “They were one-and-two in the state in cross country last season so this was great for us. Being able to sign student-athletes from New Mexico is a great thing for us and it’s a great thing for NM State and for fans here to be able to see local athletes competing for our university.”
