LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s tennis team opens the 2014 spring season at home against

Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Utah State on Saturday, Jan. 25.

NM State first meets the Islanders, a team that is already six matches into the spring season. TAMUCC got its first six matches from the Lobo Winter Tennis Kickoff in Albuquerque, N.M. last weekend. The team went 3-3, falling twice to New Mexico but winning two duals over Arizona and splitting with UC Irvine.

On Saturday, the Aggies welcome former conference foe Utah State to the NM State Tennis Center. The blue Aggies are 1-1 this season and coming off a 5-2 win over Idaho State on Monday. USU faces TAMUCC in Las Cruces before meeting the Aggies, but the teams have met several times while in the Western Athletic Conference together.

Last season, NM State defeated USU 4-0 in the first round of the WAC Tournament just days after finished off the regular season with a 4-2 win over the northern Aggies.

In the fall, NM State saw success from newcomer Liam Goldberg as he won the 2013 Aggie Invitational. Goldberg breezed to a two-set win over his opponent from in-state rival New Mexico, 6-0, 6-4 in the finals match, earning his first tournament title as an Aggie. Of his four matches this weekend, Goldberg took just one match to three sets.

In doubles action, it was sophomore Naveen Manivannan and newcomer Thomas Douglas that proved successful by stepping into the quarterfinals round of the ITA Mountain Regional tournament after winning their first two matches of the fall-ending tournament.

The Aggies host Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. before meeting Utah State at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Both events are free to the public and are held at the NM State Tennis Center.
