Aggie Volleyball Wins Second Straight WAC Tournament Title

PHOENIX, ARIZ. – The New Mexico State volleyball team earned its second straight Western Athletic Conference Tournament title in straight sets (25-9, 25-12, 25-16) on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Senior Desiree Scott was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Senior Stephanie Ziegler, senior Ciara Brown and redshirt sophomore Bradley Nash each earned all-tournament honors.

The Aggies finished the match with a team-hitting percentage of .308 and Brown led with 15 assists on the night. Ziegler had nine digs on the night and Nash added eight kills. The Aggies held Bakersfield to a negative .043 hitting percentage and kept them to just 25 kills to NM State’s 29.

“I feel great. I am really proud of the team,” head coach Mike Jordan said. “We did a great job executing and stayed humble. I was happy with the way we were serving the ball. I thought it was probably our best serving match of the year.”

Aggies earned the first five points of set one with some big blocks and a pair of kills. The Aggies outscored the Runners 8-1 before giving up three straight points. NM State kept the lead well into the match by as much as 16 as the team hit .400 and Scott had four kills and five block assists, as the Aggies claimed the set 25-9. The Aggies held Bakersfield to a negative .067 hitting percentage and had 10 digs to the Runners seven.

NM State held onto the momentum in set two for a 6-1 lead early on. The Runners broke up a nine-point run with a kill, but that did not stop NM State as the team took set two 25-12. The Aggies saw seven kills in the set with a .172 team hitting percentage and managed six assists. Bakersfield had just 12 points, but had 18 digs with eight kills and eight assists in the match.

Set three saw Bakersfield take its first lead of the match with a 5-3 advantage, but NM State quickly tied things up at six apiece and regained the lead with a block assist by Nash and Scott. The Aggies went on an 8-2 run over the Runners for a five-point lead. NM State held onto the lead and claims its second straight WAC Tournament title with a third-set win 25-16.

The Aggies now wait to learn their fate for the 2013 NCAA Tournament on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. The Aggies head to the NCAA tournament for the seventh time in program history and second in as many seasons.
