Aggies Drop First League Match of the Year

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The New Mexico State volleyball team dropped its first Western Athletic Conference match falling to Bakersfield in five sets (25-14, 25-18, 24-26, 22-25, 12-15) in Bakersfield, Calif., Thursday, Oct. 17.  With the loss NM State falls to 11-9 overall and 6-1 in WAC play, while the Roadrunners move to 12-9 and 4-3 in league play.

The Aggies got off to a great start winning the first two sets in dominant fashion holding Bakersfield to a .000 hitting percentage in set one and a .091 hitting percentage in set two.  There were 16 ties and nine lead changes in set three but the final lead change went to Bakersfield with the Aggies losing 26-24.

NM State tallied 18 errors in the next three sets with the Roadrunners picking up the win in set four 25-22.  The Aggies took an early lead in set five and went up by three mid-way through at 11-8.  The Aggies gave up a side out on a Bakersfield kill and the Roadrunners took advantage of that momentum shift to tie up the set at 11-11 before taking a 12-11 lead on a ball-handling error by an Aggie setter.  NM State tallied one more kill by ended up falling 15-12.

Senior Lauren Loerch marked a double-double on the night with 15 kills and 11 digs while red-shirt sophomore Bradley Nash also had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.   Senior middle hitter Desiree Scott marked 11 kills and eight total blocks scoring 15 points for the Aggies.

The Aggies play a critical match against Utah Valley in Orem, Utah, Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. (MT).  NM State is currently leading the WAC at 6-1, just one-half match ahead of UVU, which is 6-2 in league play.  Live stats will be available online free of charge at www.NMStateSports.com.
