LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State softball team earned three wins over the weekend to kickoff fall play. The Aggies worked for two wins over the UTEP Miners, Oct. 5 and a Sunday morning win against Western New Mexico, Oct. 6.
NM State took game one over the Miners 8-1 and came back for 17-4 win in game two.
In the circle, Karysta Donisthorpe worked nine innings and was one hit away from a no-hitter in game one. The Aggies let a single up the middle go late in the seventh. She had four strikeouts on the game, while the NM State defense allowed three errors.
Giving up just one run to the Miners in the top of the seventh, NM State plated three of their own in the first inning of the weekend. Four crossed the plate in the home half of the second and one early in the third. Junior Chelsea Dohrwardt finished the day with four runs off seven hits in her nine at bats.
Makayla McAdams went the distance in the circle for game two with eight hits and one strikeout. The Aggies allowed four runs to score, two in the fourth and one in each of the next two innings.
Junior Lacey Rother had a two-run triple in the first inning, opening things up for NM State to score at least two runs in four other innings.
On Sunday, the Aggies came back for an 9-0 win over the Mustangs with senior Kristi Covarrubia plating two of those runs in the first two innings. The Aggie half of the second brought around six runs, including a two-run home run by sophomore Emma Adams. The third baseman finished the game with a walk and two stolen bases in the third.
NM State had 11 runs on the day. Donisthorpe and McAdams split time in the circle for Sunday’s game, combining for seven strikeouts and allowing seven hits.
NM State concludes its fall schedule with a doubleheader versus Midland College, Oct. 12, beginning at 11 a.m., at the NM State Softball Complex.
