Aggies Handle Idaho; Move to 3-0 in WAC Play

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State senior Desiree Scott scored 22 points and led the Aggies to a sweep (25-15, 25-18, 25-19) over Idaho, Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Pan American Center to move to 3-0 in Western Athletic Conference play and 8-8 overall.  Idaho falls to 10-7 on the season and 3-2 in league play.

Scott marked a season-high 16 kills on a season-high .727 hitting percentage while also posting seven total blocks, five solo and two block assists.  Senior outside hitter Lauren Loerch added 12 kills and seven digs while sophomore outside hitter added 10 kills on a .316 hitting percentage.

“Desiree [Scott] played outstanding today and our setters did a great job locating her,” said head coach Mike Jordan.  “She is a great attacker and at times even a better blocker.” 

Senior Ciara Brown had a match-high 24 assists as she fed Scott for most of the afternoon.  Sophomore Taylor Livoti added 14 assists and seven digs as senior outside hitter Stephanie Ziegler played well all-around marking one service ace, six kills and 15 digs.

NM State out-hit the Vandals .298-.067 and out-block them 11-6.  The Aggies marked only three attack errors in set one and won 25-15.  NM State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in set one and remained in control the entire time as there were no ties or lead changes.

There were five ties and three lead changes in set two with Idaho taking an 11-8 lead midway through.  NM State used a 7-0 run and finished winning the set 25-18. 

 The Aggies hit .342 as a team in set three and took a 5-4 lead early on.  NM State held the lead the rest of the set, closing out the match with a 25-19 win.

“Idaho was a good challenge to start the weekend and now we need to get prepared for Seattle,” said Jordan.

The Aggies play Seattle U, Sunday, Oct. 6 at 12:00 p.m. (MT) in the Pan American Center.  The match is scheduled to air on KSNM AM 570 while score updates are available on Twitter @NMStateAggies.
