SAN DIEGO – The New Mexico State University women’s tennis team concluded day two of play at the San Diego State Fall Classic on Saturday by placing one singles player and a doubles team in the championship matches scheduled for Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center.

Aggie sophomore Mia Brandt cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Taylor Young of fellow WAC member Grand Canyon University to reach the championship match of the Silver Draw.  Brandt now faces Olivia Larsson of host San Diego State in the final match.  Brandt will try to become the third Aggie player to win her draw this season.

Larson kept the draw from being an all-Aggie final by defeating NM State’s sophomore Chloe Jolliff in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles play, the Aggie duo of juniors Susana Alcaraz and Denise Van Der Ben won a highly-contested match versus a team from the University of San Diego, 8-7.  The couple now faces Grand Canyon’s Janaki Gunuganti and Frederique Van de Velde in Sunday’s championship match of the Black Draw.

Other winners for NM State on Saturday included freshman Brittany Collens and senior Annemieke Wiite who will move on to compete in the consolation final of the their draws on Sunday.  Collens won in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, over Loyola Marymount’s Laura Mueller.  Witte, meanwhile, also won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, over Mikayla Morkel-Brink of San Diego.

Collens also teamed up with sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava to win their doubles match, 8-3, over a team from Pepperdine.

Among other Aggie players, senior Ros-Polly Nguyen and Shrivastava each lost their singles semifinal match in the Gold Draw.  Nguyen lost 6-3, 6-3 to Van de Velde while Shrivastava also lost in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to Gunuganti.

Also, Alcaraz lost 6-4, 6-1 to San Diego State’s Laura Antonana and Van Der Ben lost in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, to another Aztec player, Kristin Buth.

In doubles, the NM State teams of Nguyen/Witte and Brandt/Jolliff both fell on Saturday.

All Aggie players, singles and doubles, will play their final matches on Sunday as the SDSU Fall Classic comes to an end.  The day will be highlighted by the championship matches for each draw.  Action is set to start at 10 a.m. (MT).
