Aggie Soccer Travels to Idaho and Seattle U

The New Mexico State soccer team travels west for a pair of WAC road games. The Aggies face Idaho, Friday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. in Moscow, Idaho, and Seattle U, Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. in Seattle, Wash.

Idaho

The Vandals are 1-7-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the WAC after the conference opening weekend. Idaho defeated Grand Canyon, 3-1, in Moscow, Idaho, Sept. 22. Freshman forward/midfielder Alyssa Lloyd and junior midfielder Katie Baran lead the offense with two goals each.

Series Notes

The Aggies trail Idaho in the all-time series 1-2-1. NM State is looking for its first win in Moscow, Idaho, after falling, 3-1, Oct. 28, 2012.

Previous Meeting

The Aggies concluded the 2012 season at Idaho with a 3-1 loss, Oct. 28, 2012 in Moscow, Idaho. Forward Layla Todd scored a goal for the Aggies and led the team with four goals in 2012.

Seattle U

The Redhawks have a 4-2-2 overall record and 1-0-0 conference record following a 3-1 win over Grand Canyon, Sept. 20, and 4-0 win over Cal Poly, Sept. 22. Seattle U hosts Kansas City, Sept. 27, before meeting the Aggies. The Redhawks lead the WAC in goals with 15, and three different players have three goals.

In the first-ever meeting with the Redhawks, the Aggies suffered a 2-1 loss, Oct. 26, 2012, in Seattle, Wash.

Previous Meeting

NM State started the final road trip of the season on a strong note with an early goal but fell to Seattle, 2-1, Oct. 26, 2012 in Seattle, Wash. Forward Layla Todd scored in the seventh minute, but the Redhawks tied the game before halftime and won the game on a penalty kick in the final minutes of regulation.

Aggies Win WAC Home Opener

In the second meeting of the weekend against Kansas City, NM State earned its first WAC win of the season with a 2-1 victory, Sept. 22 in Las Cruces. Senior midfielder Daisy Hernandez scored the game-winning goal in the closing minutes of regulation to secure the win for the Aggies. With the scored knotted at 1-1 in the final minutes of the match, Hernandez converted the penalty kick in the 87th minute for a 2-1 lead. The goal was the first of the season for Hernandez and her first career penalty-kick attempt. Kansas City scored first, but the tied the game at 1-1 before halftime, when junior midfielder Katie Smith recorded her first goal of the season.

Aggies Fall at Kansas City in WAC Opener

In the 2013 WAC opener, NM State fell at Kansas City, 3-0, Sept. 20 in Kansas City, Mo. The Aggies fell behind 1-0 when Kansas City scored in the sixth minute. Before the half, the Kangaroos added another score in the 39th minute of action to take a 2-0 lead into the break. In the second half, Kansas City increased its lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 58th minute.

Against the Competition

As a team, the Aggies led the WAC in shutouts with three. Individually, senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter leads the league in saves (44), shutouts (3) and shutouts per game (0.30).

Aggies Beat Wyoming

NM State concluded its non-conference slate with a 1-0 win at Wyoming, Sept. 15 in Laramie, Wyo. Sophomore defender Mikaela Haley scored her first career goal in the victory. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded a career-high nine saves en route to her second consecutive shutout. In the 51st minute, the Aggies took a 1-0 advantage, when Haley scored on a free kick. The lone score of the game was helped with an assist from senior midfielder Daisy Hernandez, her first of the season.

Aggies Record Tie in Double Overtime

After 110 minutes of action, NM State recorded a 0-0 draw at Northern Colorado, Sept. 13 in Greeley, Colo. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter anchored the Aggies with a seven saves. Senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol and junior midfielder Katie Smith led the Aggie offense with four shots each. The Aggies recorded 13 shots as a team.

Schutter Named WAC Defensive Player of the Week

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 9-15. This is her first career honor and the first for the Aggies in 2013. Schutter led the Aggies to two shutouts in the final non-conference weekend of the season. She didn’t give up a goal in 200 minutes of action. At Northern Colorado, Schutter grabbed seven saves, tying a career-high mark. She helped the Aggies to a 0-0 tie against UNC in double overtime. At Wyoming, Schutter recorded her second shutout of the weekend with a career-high nine saves in the 1-0 victory. It marks the first time Schutter has recorded back-to-back shutouts in her career. She has three shutouts this season and six in her career, which ties her for first on NM State’s career shutout list.

Defense Takes Charge

The Aggies have three shutouts through 10 matches in the 2013 season. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter owns all three shutouts, which is the most she has recorded in a single-season. She has six career shutouts, and is tied for first on NM State’s all-time list.

Aggies Fall in Overtime 2-1

In the second overtime match of the season, the Aggies fell to UC Riverside, 2-1, Sept. 8 in Las Cruces. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Aggies responded quickly in the second half. NM State evened the score, 1-1, when junior forward Layla Todd found senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol, who launched a shot from 40-yards away in the 53rd minute. The goal was her second of the season.

Aggies Fall to Stephen F. Austin

NM State began its final non-conference home weekend with a 2-0 loss to Stephen F. Austin, Sept. 6 in Las Cruces. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded six saves. Sophomore defender Mikaela Haley helped the effort and played all 90 minutes.

Koziol Dishes and Delivers

In the 2013 season opener, senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol recorded both a score and an assist versus Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23. She gave the Aggies a 3-0 halftime advantage after knocking in a goal on a corner kick in the 33rd minute. Koziol also provided the assist on Luhrsen’s score in the 16th minute. Koziol is now tied for second in career assists with six. She scored her second goal of the season against UC Riverside, Sept. 8. Koziol now ranks fourth in career goals with seven.

Aggies Edged in Overtime

The Aggies have played in three overtime matches in 2013 and have a 0-2-1 record in extra time. NM State fell to in-state rival New Mexico, 1-0, in the 100th minute, Aug. 25, and UC Riverside, 2-1, in the 95th minute, Sept. 8, and tied Northern Colorado, 0-0 in double overtime, Sept. 13.

Aggies Open UNLV Nike Invitational with Shutout

NM State recorded its first shutout of the season with a 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn in the first match of the UNLV Nike Invitational, Aug. 30, in Las Vegas, Nev. After a scoreless first half, the Aggies only needed three minutes to break the tie in the second period. Junior forward Layla Todd gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead with a score in the 48th minute from 15-yards out. It was Todd’s second goal of the season, and junior midfielder Katie Smith recorded her first assist of the season on the play. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded the shutout.

Aggies Stumble versus Portland State

NM State ended the UNLV Nike Invitational with a split 1-1 record after falling to Portland State, 7-0, Sept. 1. The Aggie offense fired eight shots with five shots on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter played the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Tayler Hammack made her Aggie debut in the second period and recorded her first career save.

Haley and Petre Honored at UNLV Nike Invitational

Sophomore defender Mikaela Haley and freshman defender Stephanie Petre earned UNLV Nike Invitational All-Tournament Team honors. The duo helped the Aggies tally their first shutout of the season in the 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn, Aug. 30.

Todd Continues to Score

After leading the Aggies in goals in 2012, junior forward Layla Todd continued the scoring trend, when she scored the first goal of the season for the Aggies. She converted a rebound off a Nebraska-Omaha defender to give NM State a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Todd’s second goal of the season was the game winner against LIU Brooklyn, Aug. 30.  She has nine career goals, which ranks third on the Aggies’ all-time list.

Aggie Offensive Steps Up

With three goals in the season opener against Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23, it was the first time the Aggies have scored multiple goals in a game since 2011.

Luhrsen Produces Game-Winners

Junior midfielder Bree Luhrsen has a knack for scoring when the Aggies need it. She increased NM State’s advantage to 2-0, with a shot from the right side from 10-yards away in the 16th-minute of action against Nebraska-Omaha. The goal was the game-winning score in the 3-1 decision and Luhrsen’s fifth career goal. Four of her goals have been game winners, and she ranks tied for second on NM State’s all-time list.

Looking Ahead

The Aggies host Grand Canyon, Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. in Las Cruces.
