KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Sept. 20)-In the 2013 WAC opener, the New Mexico State soccer team fell at Kansas City, 3-0. The Aggies slipped to 3-5-1, 0-1-0 in the conference, while the Kangaroos improve to 4-4-1, 1-0-0 in their conference debut.
The Aggies fell behind 1-0 when Kansas City scored in the sixth minute. Before the half, the Kangaroos added another score in the 39th minute of action to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
“It wasn’t for a lack of effort, we were just off,” head coach Blair Quinn said. “Everything was a little bit off. Passes were off, touches were off, we were deferring too much in our decision-making and nobody was taking over. We were just off. They just out-battled us in critical moments.”
In the second half, Kansas City increased its lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 58th minute.
Despite not finding the back of the next, the Aggies tied a season high with six shots on goal. Junior midfielder Katie Smith led the team with three shots on goal. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded seven saves.
The Aggies return to Las Cruces to host Kansas City, Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. in the WAC home opener at the NM State Soccer Complex.
“That’s the great thing about the conference this year, we get to turn right back around on Sunday and try to give it right back to them at home,” Quinn said.
