SPRINGVILLE, Utah – The New Mexico State women’s golf team opened the 2013-14 season playing in the first two rounds of the 2013 Hobble Creek Invite, Monday, Sept. 9, and are in fourth place with a team score of 609 at the Hobble Creek Golf Course, a par 71 course.
The Aggies finished the first round in second with a 302 but fell two spots after marking a 306 in round two. San Francisco has a demanding 10-stroke lead over Gonzaga, who is in second with a 600, and a 17-stroke lead over Grand Canyon sits in third. The Aggies are just two strokes behind new WAC opponent Grand Canyon heading into the final round of play.
Freshman Valeria Macias is tied for 11th leading the Aggies with a 9-over-par 151 (74-77) and junior Paige Darwin is right behind her with a 10-over-par 152 (76-76), in a tie for 14th. Macias holed three birdies in round one and one in round two, including a birdie on hole No. 6 both rounds.
Last year’s top player, sophomore Kacey Dalpes is right there with the pack as she marked and 11-over-par 153 (78-75) as she bounced back in round two with 13 pars and a birdie.
Sophomore Laura Barron is in 26th place with a 13-over-par 155 (76-79) and sophomore Viviana Macias it tied for 27th with a 14-over-par 156 (76-80). Barron tallied three birdies and eight pars in round one but struggled in round two with eight bogeys to drop down on the leaderboard.
Brigham Young’s Lea Garner heads into the final round of play atop the leaderboard with a 1-over-par 143 (70-73) and Grand Canyon’s Charlotte Jaengkit is in second with a 2-over-par 144 (73-71). San Francisco has five players in the top ten and would need to drop at least 10 strokes to lose its lead.
