Aggie Soccer Concludes Non-Conference Action

The New Mexico State soccer team hits the road for its final two non-conference matches. The Aggies meet Northern Colorado, Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in Greeley, Colo., and then face Wyoming, Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. in Laramie, Wyo.

Northern Colorado

The Bears are 2-3-0 overall this season after a 1-0 win over Air Force, Sept. 6. Sophomore forward Essence Ortiz-Lanier leads Northern Colorado with two goals.

Series Notes

The Aggies and Bears are tied in the all-time series 1-1-0. Each team has won the match on its home field. The Aggies won 1-0, Sept. 9, 2011 in Las Cruces, and Northern Colorado won 1-0, Sept. 24, 2010 in Greeley, Colo.

Previous Meeting

In the final minute of regulation, midfielder Mary Kate Koziol scored the lone goal of the match to give NM State a 1-0 win over Northern Colorado, Sept. 9, 2011 in Las Cruces. With only 20 seconds remaining in the contest, defender Vanessa Thomas found Koziol in the center of the box for the game-winning goal.


The Cowgirls have a 3-1-1 overall record following a 2-1 win at Nebraska-Omaha, Sept. 8. Wyoming hosts Weber State, Sept. 13, before the Aggies arrive in Laramie, Wyo.

Series Notes

The Aggies lead the all-time series 1-0-0. In the first-ever meeting, NM State defeated Wyoming, 2-1, Sept. 26, 2010 in Laramie.

Previous Meeting

With two goals in the second half, NM State beat Wyoming, 2-1, Sept. 26, 2010 in Laramie, Wyo. With only 10 minutes left in regulation, forward/midfielder Crystal Burns gave the Aggies a 2-1 lead with a 30-yard strike.  The Aggies tied the match, 1-1, in the 63rd minute on midfielder/forward Lauren Cope’s first goal of the season. 

Aggies Fall in Overtime 2-1

In the second overtime match of the season, the Aggies fell to UC Riverside, 2-1, Sept. 8 in Las Cruces. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Aggies responded quickly in the second half. NM State evened the score, 1-1, when junior forward Layla Todd found senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol, who launched a shot from 40-yards away in the 53rd minute. The goal was her second of the season.

Aggies Fall to Stephen F. Austin

NM State began its final non-conference home weekend with a 2-0 loss to Stephen F. Austin, Sept. 6 in Las Cruces. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded a season-high six saves. Sophomore defender Mikaela Haley helped the effort and played all 90 minutes. 

Koziol Dishes and Delivers

In the 2013 season opener, senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol recorded both a score and an assist versus Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23. She gave the Aggies a 3-0 halftime advantage after knocking in a goal on a corner kick in the 33rd minute. Koziol also provided the assist on Luhrsen’s score in the 16th minute. Koziol is now tied for second in career assists with six. She scored her second goal of the season against UC Riverside, Sept. 8. Koziol now ranks fourth in career goals with seven.

Aggies Edged in Overtime

The Aggies have played in two overtime matches in 2013 and have a 0-2-0 record in extra time. NM State fell to in-state rival New Mexico, 1-0, in the 100th minute, Aug. 25, and UC Riverside, 2-1, in the 95th minute, Sept. 8.

Aggies Open UNLV Nike Invitational with Shutout

NM State recorded its first shutout of the season with a 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn in the first match of the UNLV Nike Invitational, Aug. 30, in Las Vegas, Nev. After a scoreless first half, the Aggies only needed three minutes to break the tie in the second period. Junior forward Layla Todd gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead with a score in the 48th minute from 15-yards out. It was Todd’s second goal of the season, and junior midfielder Katie Smith recorded her first assist of the season on the play. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded the shutout.

Aggies Stumble versus Portland State

NM State ended the UNLV Nike Invitational with a split 1-1 record after falling to Portland State, 7-0, Sept. 1. The Aggie offense fired eight shots with five shots on goal, which are both second-best marks of the season, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter played the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Tayler Hammack made her Aggie debut in the second period and recorded her first career save.

Haley and Petre Honored at UNLV Nike Invitational

Sophomore defender Mikaela Haley and freshman defender Stephanie Petre earned UNLV Nike Invitational All-Tournament Team honors. The duo helped the Aggies tallied their first shutout of the season in the 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn, Aug. 30.

Todd Continues to Score

After leading the Aggies in goals in 2012, junior forward Layla Todd continued the scoring trend, when she scored the first goal of the season for the Aggies. She converted a rebound off a Nebraska-Omaha defender to give NM State a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Todd’s second goal of the season was the game winner against LIU Brooklyn, Aug. 30.  She has nine career goals, which ranks third on the Aggies’ all-time list.

Aggie Offensive Steps Up

With three goals in the season opener against Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23, it was the first time the Aggies have scored multiple goals in a game since 2011.

Luhrsen Produces Game-Winners

Junior midfielder Bree Luhrsen has a knack for scoring when the Aggies need it. She increased NM State’s advantage to 2-0, with a shot from the right side from 10-yards away in the 16th-minute of action against Nebraska-Omaha. The goal was the game-winning score in the 3-1 decision and Luhrsen’s fifth career goal. Four of her goals have been game winners, and she ranks tied for second on NM State’s all-time list.

Aggies Picked Fifth in WAC Preseason Poll

NM State was voted to finish fifth in the WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which is voted on by the league’s seven head coaches. Junior forward Layla Todd earned Preseason All-WAC team honors. She led the Aggies in shots (25) and goals (4) in 2012.

Looking Ahead

The Aggies open 2013 WAC action with a pair of games against Kansas City. NM State plays the Kangaroos in Kansas City, Mo., Sept. 20, and then returns home to host Kansas City, Sept. 22 in Las Cruces.
