The New Mexico State soccer team hosts Stephen F. Austin, Friday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m., and UC Riverside, Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m., at the NM State soccer complex.

The Ladyjacks are 2-1-1 on the season after a 3-1 loss to Arizona State, Sept. 1, and 0-0 draw in double overtime at Houston, Aug. 30. SFA has recorded three shutouts in its four games.
This is the first meeting between the Ladyjacks and Aggies.
The Highlanders have a 1-2-1 overall record following a 1-1 double overtime tie with Northern Arizona, Sept. 1. UC Riverside plays at UTEP, Friday, Sept. 6 before traveling to Las Cruces.

Aggie Soccer Opens UNLV Nike Invitational with Shutout
NM State recorded its first shutout of the season with a 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn in the first match of the UNLV Nike Invitational, Aug. 30, in Las Vegas, Nev. After a scoreless first half, the Aggies only needed three minutes to break the tie in the second period. Junior forward Layla Todd gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead with a score in the 48th minute from 15-yards out. It was Todd’s second goal of the season, and junior midfielder Katie Smith recorded her first assist of the season on the play. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded the shutout and grabbed a season-high five saves in the win.
Aggie Soccer Stumbles versus Portland State
NM State ended the UNLV Nike Invitational with a split 1-1 record after falling to Portland State, 7-0, Sept. 1. The Aggie offense fired eight shots with five shots on goal, which are both second-best marks of the season, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter played the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Tayler Hammack made her Aggie debut in the second period and recorded her first career save.
Haley and Petre Honored at UNLV Nike Invitational
Sophomore defender Mikaela Haley and freshman defender Stephanie Petre earned UNLV Nike Invitational All-Tournament Team honors. The duo helped the Aggies tallied their first shutout of the season in the 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn, Aug. 30.
Defensive Starts Strong
The Aggie defense has started the season on the right note. In three of the four matches, NM State has not allowed a first half goal. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter is anchoring the defense and has one shutout in 2013.
Todd Continues to Score
After leading the Aggies in goals in 2012, junior forward Layla Todd continued the scoring trend, when she scored the first goal of the season for the Aggies. She converted a rebound off a Nebraska-Omaha defender to give NM State a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Todd is leading the team with two goals in 2013. She has nine career goals, which ranks third on the Aggies’ all-time list.
Aggies Open Season with Win
NM State opened the 2013 season at home with a 3-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23. The Aggies posted a 12-6 advantage in shots with the veterans leading the way. Junior forward Layla Todd, junior midfielder Bree Luhrsen and senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol each scored a goal in the season opener. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter played all 90 minutes and grabbed four saves in the victory.
Aggie Offensive Steps Up
With three goals in the season opener against Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23, it was the first time the Aggies have scored multiple goals in a game since 2011.
The 2013 season marked only the second time in the program’s five years that the Aggies opened the year at home. In the 2010 season, the Aggies played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime with Montana, Aug. 22, 2010. NM State opened the 2012, 2011 and 2009 seasons on the road. The 3-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23, marked the first time the Aggies have won a season opener. The Aggies are now 1-3-1 in season openers.
Aggies Edged in Overtime
In the first overtime match of the 2013 season, NM State fell to against in-state rival New Mexico, 1-0, in the 100th minute, Aug. 25. The Lobos ended the game with 38 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, when they scored on a free kick on the right side from 30-yards away. The match was a hard fought battle with only 12 combined shots. Senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol and junior midfielder Katie Smith led the Aggies with two shots each. This was the second consecutive season the rivalry match has gone into extra periods.
Luhrsen Produces Game-Winners
Junior midfielder Bree Luhrsen has a knack for scoring when the Aggies need it. She increased NM State’s advantage to 2-0, with a shot from the right side from 10-yards away in the 16th-minute of action against Nebraska-Omaha. The goal was the game-winning score in the 3-1 decision and Luhrsen’s fifth career goal. Four of her goals have been game winners, and she ranks tied for second on NM State’s all-time list.
Koziol Dishes and Delivers
In the 2013 season opener, senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol recorded both a score and an assist. She gave the Aggies a 3-0 halftime advantage after knocking in a goal on a corner kick in the 33rd minute. Koziol also provided the assist on Luhrsen’s score in the 16th minute. Koziol is now tied for second in career assists with six and tied for fourth in career goals with six.
Aggies Picked Fifth in WAC Preseason Poll
NM State was voted to finish fifth in the WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which is voted on by the league’s seven head coaches. Junior forward Layla Todd earned Preseason All-WAC team honors. She led the Aggies in shots (25) and goals (4) in 2012.
The Aggies conclude non-conference action with two road games. NM State faces Northern Colorado, Sept. 13, in Greeley, Colo., and then Wyoming, Sept. 15, in Laramie, Wyo.
