MESA, Ariz. (April 22) – The New Mexico State women’s golf team concluded the first day of the Club Glove WAC Women’s Golf Championship on Monday by carding a 24-over-par 312 and finishing in a tie for sixth place.
The conference tournament, being played at the par 72, 6,163-yard Longbow Golf Club, will resume on Tuesday with the second round and conclude with the final 18 holes on Wednesday.
The Aggies are led by freshman Kacey Dalpes who finished in a tie for seventh place with four other golfers at 3-over 75. Dalpes carded three birdies on the day and will head into the second round seven shots behind the lead.
Fellow freshman Viviana Macias also shot a round in the 70s on Monday. Her 5-over-par 77 leaves her in a tie for 19th heading into round two.
Junior Amelie Buhl tied Dalpes for the Aggie lead in birdies, also sinking three on the day. Two of those birdies came on par-3 holes. Buhl shot a combined 1-under-par on the four par 3s, which tied her for the best score on the par 3s during the first round.
Buhl finished in a tie for 27th after shooting an 8-over 80. Joining Buhl in the group tied at 27th is NM State sophomore Laura Barron who also finished round one at 8-over-par.
Rounding out the Aggie lineup is sophomore Paige Darwin who will start the second round in 35th place at 12-over-par 84.
Denver leads the WAC Championship after carding a total-team score of 7-over-par 295. San Jose State and Texas-San Antonio sit two shots back at 9-over 297 and will start the second round in a tie for second.
Individually, Denver’s Tonje Daffinrud shot a 4-under-par 68 to take the lead heading into round two. Tonje, who is one of the top 50 players in the country according to golfstat rankings, has a two-shot lead over Regan De Guzman of San Jose State who will start the second round at 2-under 70. Texas-San Antonio’s Allie Johnston rounds out the top 3 at even par 72.
