LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State equestrian team held its lone home event of the 2013 spring season, Saturday at the NM State Equestrian Center. The Aggies fell to Baylor, 14-5 on the afternoon, while NM State also honored the team’s four seniors; Hannah Swarthout, Samantha Stephens, Megan Gould and Laura Bostwick in their final home event.

The Western team fell to Baylor 7-2, scoring one point in Horsemanship and in Reining, while the Hunter Seat team lost 7-3, as the Equitation over Fences score was 4-1 and the Equitation on the Flat ended at 3-2.

“The loss today is not exactly how we hoped to start the spring season, but it does help us make a plan for the remainder of the season,” head coach Robin Morris-Walters said. “We need to build on our strengths and improve our weak areas to handle upcoming competition on the road.  I know the hunter seat riders have really come on strong with the addition of Coach Hensley and our western squad had a few bobbles that kept us from win points, the head to head margin of loss was narrow.  I think correcting these minor errors will allow us to finish the season strong.”

Brynn Larson defeated Baylor’s Rachel Nankervis, 73.5-69.5 in Horsemanship for the Aggies lone point, while Marissa Bartmann beat Katherine Berg of Baylor, 70-61.5 in Reining for NM State single point in the event.

Emily McConnell had a great weekend for the Aggies, winning both her Equitation on the Flat and Equitation over Fences head-to-head match ups. She defeated Baylor’s Lindsey Otis 76-71 in the Flat competition, while handling Sue Carol Thompson, 85-78.

Sydney Morse earned the other point for the Aggies in Equitation on the Flat with a 73-70 win over Kim Woodsum of Baylor.

McConnell will compete at the fourth-annual Collegiate Equitation Challenge as part of the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla., on Feb. 8. As a team, the Aggies will next travel to Fresno, Calif., to face Fresno State and South Dakota State, March 1-2.
