Aggies Sweep the Lobos in The Pit

ALBUQUERQUE - The New Mexico State volleyball team swept its in-state rival New Mexico (25-23, 25-13, 25-19) in The Pit, Tuesday, Oct. 23.  NM State improves to 15-7 on the year while the Lobos drop to 18-6 on the year and this is the first time the Aggies have swept the Lobos since 2006.

Sophomore Meredith Hays led the offensive charge posting a match-high 16 kills while hitting for a match-high .438 hitting percentage.  Junior middle hitting Desiree Scott played efficiently once again posting a .429 hitting percentage as she added five kills on seven swings with two errors.  The Aggies as a team marked a .276 hitting percentage, while holding the Lobos to a .040 hitting percentage.

Junior Lauren Loerch added eight kills, while junior Ciara Brown and freshman Taylor Livoti split the setting duties.  Brown posted 18 assists and Livoti tallied 13. Livoti also had a team-high eight digs on the evening.

The Aggies took an early 6-2 lead in set one but UNM came back and tied it up at 15-15.  NM State fell behind 16-15 but regained the lead at 19-18 when senior Madison Hardy tallied a service ace.  UNM took a two-point lead at 22-20 but the Aggies put together a 4-0 scoring rally after that that was topped off by a triple-block in the middle to go up 24-22.  Scott, who went 4-of-4 on offense, wrapped up the set with a kill to boost NM State to a 25-23 win.

NM State held the Lobos to a .028 hitting percentage in set two, while hitting .333 itself.  Up 14-8 midway thru the set, the Aggies put together a 10-2 scoring rally to extend the lead to 23-12.  Hays slammed down her 12th kill of the match to give the Aggies a 25-13 win.

There were 11 ties and seven lead changes in set three with UNM taking a 16-15 lead late in the match.  NM State then used an 8-2 scoring rally to take a 23-18 lead before a block by Nathalie Castellanos and Scott gave NM State the 25-19 win.

The Aggies head back into WAC play taking on Denver, Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. (MT) in Denver.  NM State heads into that match tied for second in the WAC standings with Idaho.  Live stats will be available for that match at www.NMStateSports.com.
