SAN DIEGO (Sept. 30) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team wrapped up play at the San Diego State University Fall Classic on Sunday with two more singles victories as well as a doubles victory.

The final day of the tournament was highlighted for the Aggies by a consolation final win by junior Ros-Polly Nguyen, who won her final two matches of the tournament.  Nguyen defeated Ilona Serchenko of North Texas in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.  Freshman Mia Brandt also won her final match of the weekend over Cal-State Northridge's Leslie Chang (6-3, 6-4), while the doubles team of senior Jodie Williams and sophomore Denis Van Der Ben defeated the team of Bohart and Chang of Cal-State Northridge (8-3).

"It was good to see the team fight so hard over the last few days against some very tough competition," head coach Ivan Fernandez said.  "It gave me some good insight on what we need to keep working on to get the team ready for the spring."

Senior Ginet Pinero also had a consolation final on Sunday.  She, however, lost to Laura Claus of San Diego, 6-2, 6-1.  Pinero and Nguyen also lost a doubles consolation final in a heavily contested match with the team of Barbadush and Sprinkmeyer of North Texas.  The match had to go to an extra game before the North Texas victory, 9-7.  In another consolation doubles final, Brandt and junior Annemicke Witte lost to San Diego's Depenau and Haciriafoglu, 8-2.

Overall, NM State had a productive weekend in San Diego with six singles wins, all three doubles teams winning one match and Nguyen's consolation final win on the last day.  All seven Aggie participants had at least one win during the tournament, whether in singles or doubles.

NM State women's tennis now looks forward to sending participants to the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 10-14.  For all things NM State women's tennis log on to NMStateSports.com.
