LAS CRUCES, N.M.-New Mexico State University senior Courtney Schultz was named the female cross country Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 27-Sept. 2.
Schultz, a senior from Cloudcroft, N.M. (Cloudcroft HS), won the Lobo Invitational individual title in Albuquerque, N.M., on Friday, Aug. 30, in the Aggies first race of the 2012 season, finishing the 5K course in 18:11.9. Schultz, the 2011 WAC Champion, edged out her sister Camille by 4.8 seconds for the races top spot.
Schultz became the first female cross country athlete to win the award for the 2012 season.
Schultz began the 2012 regular season just as strongly as she finished the 2011 season-by finishing first place overall. The last team event for cross country Schultz competed in was the WAC Championships in 2011 where Schultz finished first overall as the Aggies finished second overall in the conference.
Schultz finished first for NM State in all but one event she competed in during the 2011 season. Schultz was also named WAC Athlete of the Year, as well as being named to the first team All-Conference and received All-Academic honors from the conference. Schultz concluded her 2011 campaign by competing in her first NCAA Championships where she finished 88th overall.
Schultz and the rest of the Aggies will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 7, when they travel to Santa Teresa, N.M., for the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational.
