ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-The New Mexico State University cross country team's season is officially under way after the Aggies concluded its first meet of the season in Albuquerque, N.M., with the Lobo Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 1.
Senior sisters Courtney and Camille Schultz began their senior season by finishing first and second in the women's 5K. Courtney finished first overall with a time of 18:11.9 and Camille finished second overall with a time of 18:16.7. It took almost a full 10 seconds for third place to cross the finish line after the Schultz sisters finished their race.
Freshman Mayra Chavez finished seventh overall and third for NM State with a time of 19:09.5 in her first event as an Aggie. Sophomore Caroline Lewiecki finished right behind Chavez for eighth overall and fourth for NM State with a time 19:13.7.
On the men's side, senior Jonah Ruybalid finished first for NM State and sixth overall with a time of 19:35.2 in the men's 8K. Ruybalid is entering 2012 coming off a 2011 season where he finished first for NM State in six of the seven events he competed in. Senior Terry Williams cracked the top-10 when he finished second for NM State and ninth overall with a time of 19:43.8. Three Aggies finished consecutively for 11-13th place.
The Aggies will next be in action on Saturday, Sept. 8, for the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational in Santa Teresa, N.M.
