LAS CRUCES, N.M. (July 11) - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the All-Academic teams and individual scholar athletes for the 2011-12 season. Four athletes from the women's team and the senior captain from the men's team were honored as scholar-athletes for New Mexico State.
The Aggie women's team earned the ITA All-Academic team award for the fifth straight year and ninth time in 10 seasons.
Departed 2012 senior Manon Sylvain earned ITA Scholar Athlete honors for the second time in her NM State career. Rising senior Jodie Williams and rising junior Annemieke Witte were each recognized by the organization for the second straight season. Additionally, Denise Van Der Ben earned her first honor from the ITA after completing her freshman campaign.
"This is great accomplishment for our team and especially for the four that were named scholar athletes," said women's head coach Ivan Fernandez. "Their dedication and commitment to academics makes me very proud to be their coach."
On the men's side, departed senior captain Matej Stakne drew ITA Scholar Athlete recognition. It marks the third straight season Stakne claimed the honor.
"Ever since the day Matej arrived here on campus at NM State, he has been an exemplary student," said men's head coach Carlos Vargas. "It makes me very happy to see him recognized for all of his hard work."
