LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The NM State men's golf team will look to defend their 2011 conference title as they head to Henderson, Nev. for the 2012 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Golf Championships from April 30-May 2, 2012.  The par 72, 7,332 yard course at the Rio Secco Golf Club will host the tournament.

"I expect us to be in the last two in the field with a chance to win," head coach Mike Dirks said.  "We've still got three of at least the top nine players in our conference on our team with Justin, Gaston, and Zach.  If they show up to play then hopefully they can continue to help us, and we need to get a round from Miko like he had in Phoenix.  I think we should compete for a conference championship."

Senior Zachery Fullerton, senior Gaston De La Torre, redshirt senior Miko Alejandro, junior Justin Shin, and freshman Cosme Beamonte will represent the Aggies at this year's championship.  The five golfers have combined for nine top-5 finishes and 15 top-10 finishes this season.  Fullerton, De La Torre, and Shin were members of the 2011 WAC Championship team.  De La Torre has been named All-WAC three times, while Shin has earned two All-WAC awards and Fullerton won his first last year.

The Aggies have won five WAC Golf Championships in six years.  Last year NM State shot a three round score of 11-over par, 875 (289-295-291) and defeated San Jose State by 13 strokes.  The Aggies carded a final round score of 3-over par, 291.

De La Torre led the Aggies with a fourth-place finish overall carding a three round score of 1-under par, 215. He fired a 2-under par, 70 in the final round, recording seven birdies. This was De La Torre's second top-10 finish at a WAC Championship.

Shin carded a final round score of 2-over par, 74, finishing the tournament at 2-over par, 218, placing fifth overall.  Shin collected three birdies in the final round.  Madigan had a solid final round for the Aggies, grabbing his fourth WAC title in four years.  Madigan recorded an even-par, 72, as he placed sixth overall for the tournament with a three-round score of 3-over par, 219.  He tallied one birdie and two eagles in his final round.

Joon Lee finished his first WAC Championship at 8-over par, 224, carding a final round score of 4-over par, 76.  Lee placed tied for ninth overall after recording a final round that saw three birdies, two of those birdies on 17 and 18.  Fullerton carded a 3-over par, 75 in the final round.  Fullerton placed 12th overall with a three-round score of 9-over par, 225.  He recorded two birdies in his final round.
