LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Feb. 8) - The No. 53 New Mexico State men's tennis team could not get things going against rival No. 59 New Mexico Wednesday afternoon as the Aggies dropped a 7-0 decision to the Lobos at the NM State Tennis Center.

The loss snapped a three-match win streak for the Aggies (4-4) while UNM (5-2) extended its win streak to three games. Both teams came into their annual meeting ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll for the third time in four seasons. But it marked the first time that NM State entered the scuffle with a higher ranking. The Lobos have now won 11 of the last 13 in the series.

"We were flat today," said Aggie head coach Carlos Vargas. "I think the road trip finally caught up with us. It's unfortunate that we came into such a big match like this mentally and physically drained. But I'm confident we'll bounce back and be ready for South Alabama on Friday."

NM State earned a win on doubles court two as the sophomore tandem of Felipe Frattini and Marc Westgate won 8-5. But UNM took the point with wins on courts one and three.

At No. 5 singles, Frattini pushed his match to a third-set superbreaker. The Aggie won the first set over UNM's Carl Ho 6-4. But the Lobo came back in the second with a 7-5 win. In the deciding superbreaker, Ho earned the point at 10-4. At No. 1 singles, No. 81 Jadon Phillips of UNM swept Aggie senior Matej Stakne 6-2, 6-0. New Mexico also won the other four singles matches in straight sets.

The Aggies continue their weekend home stand against South Alabama on Friday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. on the courts of the NM State Tennis Center.
