RUSTON, LA. - The New Mexico State football team, (4-8, 2-4) fell to Louisiana Tech (8-4, 6-1) 44-0 in Ruston, La., Saturday afternoon.
Kenny Turner led the Aggies will 149 yards rushing on 29 carries. It was Turner's sixth 100-yard game of the season. Travaughn Colwell threw for 119 yards on 15-of-25 passing. Taveon Rogers caught five passes for 56 yards. Donyae Coleman led the Aggie defense with eight tackles and his sixth interception of the season.
The Bulldogs took the opening drive of the second half right down the field and pushed their lead to 30-0 with 11:47 left in the third quarter. The Aggies would then turn the ball over on downs to give LA Tech the all with 8:35 to go in the third.
Coleman then picked off a LA Tech pass, his sixth of the season, giving the ball back to the Aggies. The Aggies were forced to punt and on the punt return, the Bulldogs took it back 82 yards to take a 37-0 lead with 5:19 left in the third quarter.
LA Tech added another touchdown late in the third to go up 44-0 on NM State. The Aggies would drive inside the LA tech 10-yard line but Tyler Stampler would miss a 31-yard field goal attempt off the left upright, as the score remained 44-0 with 11:45 left in the game.
Neither team could find the end zone again as the game ended at 44-0 in favor of LA Tech.
LA Tech took an early lead at 3-0 with a 33-yard field goal mid-way thru the first quarter. NM State could not get the offense started and were forced to punt again. LA Tech then marched 89 yards on 10 plays to take a 9-0 lead after a missed PAT with 5:24 left in the first quarter.
The Aggies drove deep into LA Tech's field but could not convert on a fourth and long, turning the ball over on downs. The NM State defense held the Bulldogs and forced a punt. The Aggies were driving but an interception by Colwell gave the ball back to LA Tech. Green then intercepted the Bulldogs first pass of its drive to give the ball back to NM State with 9:24 left in the half. It was Green's first interception of his career.
The Aggies' offense would again go deep into the Bulldogs part of the field but were forced to punt after two straight sacks by LA Tech. The Bulldogs would take over inside their own 5-yard line with four minutes on the clock.
The Bulldogs moved the ball down the field and inside the NM State 5-yard line with just under a minute to play. A 1-yard rushing touchdown gave LA Tech a 16-0 advantage with less than 30 seconds in the half.
LA Tech then intercepts Colwell's pass and returned it for a touchdown to go up 23-0 going into the locker room at halftime.
Colwell threw for 103 yards in the first half, as Turner rushed for 59 yards on nine carries. Rogers caught four passes for 49 yards. Coleman led the defense with five tackles.
The Aggies will face Utah State in the season finale Dec. 3 at 1:30 p.m. in Aggie Memorial Stadium.
