HEAD COACH DEWAYNE WALKER

THOUGHTS ON NMSU V. UNM GAME

"It's very exciting! I know both coaches' feel like this is a winnable game and I know players from both teams a going to be very excited about this game.  It's an in-state rivalry and both teams are hungry for a victory."

THOUGHTS ON ANY CHANGES

"We're probably going to put more pressure on the coaches in terms of bringing a little more fire into practice.  I know when you're 0-4 like this, and even though it's a rivalry game, I just kind of mention it to the coaches; I want more intensity in practice."

THOUGHTS ON QB MATT CHRISTIAN

"It's going to be tough; it could be a game day decision.  We have to get Tanner Rust ready to go.  Coach Dunbar has a nice plan in place to really fit into Tanner's style of play.  We'll just go through the week of practice and see how those guys are playing.  Hopefully Matt will make a big time recovery."

THOUGHTS ON THE TEAM

"To be honest, on Sunday, I think they were happy to get through the Boise State game.  Let's not kid ourselves, they were the third ranked team in the country and our guys knew going in this was going to be a tough game.  I think our guys feel this is a winnable game and I know they want to win.  I think the attitude is a little more bubbly at this stage than after the Boise game."

THOUGHTS ON NMSU AND UNM'S FOOTBALL PROGRAM

"We just look at the history of both program's.  UNM has probably had more football tradition than NMSU, not that we don't want to give our program any credit in terms of where we're headed and where we want to go.  I'm pretty sure they're upset about where they are.  We're not very happy where we are either.  We're trying to build a program here and our focus is on what we need to do at New Mexico State to get this program going versus where UNM is.  We just have to keep working and keep doing the things necessary to build this program."

THOUGHTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RUNNING GAME

"I think it's critical.  We need to get more out of our running backs and our offensive line has done a great job with pass protection, but I know this week Coach Dunbar and Coach Lenzmeier know how important it is for us to try to run the ball.  With Tanner being able to get first downs with his legs, that's going to be critical too.  We run similar offenses, so the quarterback is key in the running game."

THOUGHTS ON TOUGH ENOUGH TO WEAR PINK

"That's just the icing on the cake, with Tough Enough to Wear Pink along with the status of both programs and it is a rivalry game.  Last year I was really involved.  My sister is a survivor of breast cancer and she was at the game.  It's a part of me and my family and even our football team because I'm sure our players have been touched by it in some point in their lives too with family members.  Not only are we serious about the rivalry, but Tough Enough to Wear Pink, with what it represents, that's also a sensitive issue with our football team."

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN DONTE SAVAGE

THOUGHTS ON RIVALRY GAME AGAINST UNM

"It's a good rivalry.  From what I've seen, it's a lot of people, the whole community, loves this rivalry and the whole state loves it.  I've seen good things from this rivalry."

THOUGHTS ON CURRENT STATE OF TEAM AFTER BOISE STATE GAME

"That's in the past; everyone's moved on.  We can't dwell on the past, we just have to keep pushing and think about UNM."

DEFENSIVE BACK JONTE GREEN

THOUGHTS ON RIVALRY AGAINST UNM

"It's a big rivalry.  The three years I've been here it's been a big impact game.  Either team can win. Whoever wants it, is going to get it."

THOUGHTS ON LAST YEAR'S VICTORY AGAINST UNM

"Last year was a big win for us.  It was a very close game and this year our team is going to try to match what we did last year."

QUARTERBACK TANNER RUST

THOUGHTS ON GAME AGAINST BOISE STATE

"It was a tough loss, but being out there for the first time and getting my feet wet really felt good.  Obviously, I have stuff to work on, but just being back on the field felt really good."

THOUGHTS ON PREPARING AS A STARTER

"Every week you have to prepare as a starter.  I'm going to prepare like I am.  I don't know the extent of Matt's injury, but I think every week you need to prepare to be ready."

THOUGHTS ON RIVALRY AGAINST UNM

"Last year I got to experience it and it was a lot of fun.  I didn't get to play in it, but going up there was a big scene and it's going to be big here, too.  Just looking forward to the challenge."
