LAS CRUCES, N.M.-The New Mexico State Women's tennis team
plays host to I-25 rival New Mexico, Saturday, March 13, at 10:00 a.m. at the
NM State Tennis Center. Free Pizza will be provided to those who attend.
The Aggies (5-7) look to break their two-match losing streak
by beating the in-state rival.
"Rivalry games always mean more, just like UTEP did. It's
been a long time since we beat UNM and I think we have a good chance this year,"
head coach Don Ball said.
The Aggies fell to the Lobos 5-2 in 2009 and had their last
victory over UNM in 2002, giving UNM a 14-2 record over NM State since 1981.
The Lobos come into the match with a 1-8 record after
falling to Boise State and Washington State in February. UNM meets UTEP Friday, March 12, before meeting
the Aggies in Las Cruces.
The Aggies expect to be back to full strength this weekend
after senior Sophia Marks sat out from competition last week. Marks has been
out of her No. 1 singles spot for the past three matches.
"If we are all healthy, which I think we will be, we have a
very good chance," Ball said.
The Aggies doubles teams have proven to be vital in
competition this season. NM State has taken the doubles point in its past seven
matches. Doubles pair Aleksa Costa and Isabela Kulaif have won six of their
seven matches as a team and are currently on a three-match winning streak.
The rivalry dual begins at 10:00 a.m., March 13, and pizza
will be available throughout the match.
